  • You clearly love writing, what inspired you to write for children in particular?
Writing is very therapeutic for me. I write to escape into a world created by my imagination. I understand that the imagination of a child is very special; that it is the soil which sprouts and grows to perfection our future leaders, scientists, inventors, and artists. I hope that the stories that I create which help me, also help the children who read them and that they carry the messages and creativity with them into their adulthood.
  • When did you start writing?
I started writing stories from the time I could read and write. I remember that I would read a story and if I did not like how the story ended, I would make up a different ending to it. Or if it was too short, I would add more to it. My imagination was always flowing. Recently, I decided that I would like to share my stories so that others could enjoy them too.
  • How do you maintain your creativity and stay dedicated to finishing a book?
I can find a story in everything, but I find my creativity the most when I am listening to music. If I hear a song that I like, I find myself creating a story about it in my mind. I’ll play that song over and over again, until I have completed the story. Currently I am finishing up the first book in a series of three for youths, and I am also working on a young adult novel, so I am creating a playlist to find inspiration and ideas to complete those stories. Phylicia Rashad once said, “Before a child speaks, it sings.” I find this to be true. In my mind, I am singing the story and then writing the song.
  • What were your early years like?
I am originally from the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago. I immigrated to Pompano Beach, Florida, with my family when I was the age of thirteen. Reading stories was a big part of our lives growing up. I loved retelling stories to my younger cousins. Folklore, Fairytales, Fables, Science Fiction, Mystery, Mythology, you name it, I loved it! I would even make up stories of my own. Whenever I felt stressed or didn’t feel like I fit in, stories helped me escape into an imaginative world made up of whimsical nonsense.
  • What books do you like to read, and do you have a favorite author?
I love anything that starts with the words, “Once upon a time.” Reading and hearing those words calms me and carries me into a world of fantasy. As for authors—there are so many that I love, but off the top of my head, I would have to say old school; The Grimm Brothers, Lewis Carroll, and Aesop. New school would be J.K. Rowling, Joseph Delaney, and Jonathan Stroud.
  • What about today? Career? Family? Ambitions?
My other superpower—when I am not daydreaming and writing—is being a flight attendant for the “LUV” airline. I am also a mother to two beautiful, teenage girls. My oldest daughter loves to sing and to illustrate. She would like to be a singer, and if that does not work out, a storyboard artist. My youngest daughter loves to illustrate anime characters. She would also love to be a storyboard artist. It is my ambition to one day contribute to the world a fictional masterpiece that leaves people in love with the art of imagination.
  • Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share with your readers?
I love Christmastime and a great cup of coffee!
